    THE ELEMENTS OF COLOR

Students in my Design Realization course learning about hue, saturation, and value.

    PASSIVE HOUSE STUDIO

Students building enclosures for hot potatoes to understand the impact of insulation, thermal bridges, and air infiltration on heat loss.

    CREATIVE DESTRUCTION

The studio a few hours after the final assignment deadline.

    PLAN FOR ACTIVE LEARNING

Our school did not have a design studio space, so I worked with my colleagues and facilities to retrofit a lounge space into a classroom for active learning.

  • Student Work: Line Extension

The talented Michael O’Neill made this video in my marketing class in response to an assignment to illustrate a core marketing concept.

  • COURSES TAUGHT

    Design Realization

A studio course, shown above, where students learn the value of core principles of design and basics of two-dimensional and three-dimensional representation by creating drawings and models.

    Marketing

A foundational course in marketing using the classic Kotler text. Students create marketing plans for local businesses, passive house products, and learn fundamental vocabulary by creating videos like this.

    Arts, Technology, and Culture

A colloquium with invited speakers including MAKE magazine founder and creator of Maker Faire Dale Dougherty and participatory experience designer Melissa Mongiat of Daily Tous Les Jours.

  • COURSES TAUGHT

    Blogging and Design

In this course, which I taught twice, students collaborated to run a design blog and wrote papers targeted to a specific academic journal. Several students presented their work from this course at conferences; two later published a book chapter based on their analysis of an Anthropologie brand community blog.

    Design Studies Theories and Methods

I developed and taught this semester-long seminar for first-year graduate students coming to the advanced study of design from an array of unrelated programs.

    Sustainable Everyday Practices

I contributed lectures on practice theory and actor-network theory to this studio course taught by Kakee Scott in which students were challenged to prototype scenarios for a low-carbon future.
